Surtees was a 19th century novelist who has been described as being to the country what Dickens was to the town. His novels are full of skulduggery; debt dodgers, swindlers, fake ‘gentlemen’ and horse nobblers plus some surprisingly good female characters. We’re unlikely to see any of his works dramatized by the BBC since a thread running through them is fox hunting, so they are not stories for the faint hearted. There is a society devoted to his life and works. They publish some very good facsimiles of the original editions.
