Anthony Trollope

Mr Trollope is my favourite Victorian author. He was the (first?) novelist to use the same cast of characters who often appear in one book then recede into the background in others. I’ve never been able to make up my mind (and various books on  his world haven’t enlightened me) if Trollope was simply a chronicler of his age or a wonderful satirist. Anyway all you need to know when reading his books is: it’s all about the money. His was a world without social security. Marrying well meant status and being financially secure.  My favourite  Trollope novel is, The Prime Minister though I think Dr Thorne is rather good too. The Way We Live Now shows there’s nothing new about the financial crash of 2008.
