I’ve just had an article of that name published in this month’s QuarterlyReview . The name refers to the city of Volgograd previously known as Stalingrad. It’s a bit off the beaten track for tourists being over 500 miles south of Moscow. This is a large industrial city almost totally destroyed during the Second World War and now littered with monuments to the great battle which produced the highest casualty figures in the history of warfare. The most striking of these is the great statue; ‘The Motherland Calls’. It’s the largest ‘female’ statue in the world and the tallest (50m) in Europe.
