Tom Wolfe

I was on my way to work this morning at the Mining Institute when I read about the death of Tom Wolfe. I think he was the last great American ‘Man of Letters’  (though let’s not forget Donna Tarrt’). Most people will remember his first novel ‘Bonfire of the Vanities’ but my personal favourite is ‘A Man In Full’ a wickedly funny satire. The novels which followed are very good too. Wolfe believed that to write about America you had to go out and experience it. Quite right too. He also introduced me to the subject of neuroscience. There’s a good obituary in today’s London Times.
