Tom Wolfe

I was on my way to do some work at the Mining institute when I learnt that Tom Wolfe  had died; the last great American Man Of Letters ( though Donna Tarrt may make a worthy successor).

Wolfe was erudite ( I got into reading about neuroscience thanks to him) and very funny. We  may remember ‘Bonfire of the Vanities’ but my favourite was ‘A Man in Full’. His other novels were pretty good too. A major observer of the American scene and a man who believed that to write about it you had to go out and participate. The Times has a rather good obituary of him. A great writer who was rather well dressed too.
