I read an article in today’s paper based on a book to be published about the Fauld Mine explosion. The abandoned parts of the mine were used by the RAF/USAAF as a bomb dump. In 1944 there was a huge explosion which among other things vaporised an entire farm. The explosion was one of the largest non nuclear detonations. It’s worth looking at the site on Google Earth and appreciating that those mature pines are growing at the bottom of a 90ft deep crater. Apparently the site was of interest to biologists because the explosion destroyed everything living there and this provided scientists with an unusual opportunity to study the rate that plants etc. would return.
