I’ve just had an article published in the Quarterly Review about retirement apartments or ‘retirement villages’ as they’re sometimes cosily called. Initially it was intended to be an amusing piece about how sterile and boring these places can be. Then I dug deeper and started looking at how much these places cost; the hidden charges and so forth. Interestingly after an inmate dies and relatives are attempting to sell the place, service charges may continue. So even when dead the deceased gets billed for the laundry.
