I’ve been following the development of the Woodhouse Colliery in Cumbria. It’s an attempt to mine quality anthracite for use in the British & European steel industries. The level of opposition is astonishing as is the level of ignorance. As usual the BBC allows those opposed to the project a platform but never anyone in support. The colliery is situated near Whitehaven one of the poorest towns in the country and there is a potential for 500 new jobs. This has no impact on the former leaders of the Labour and Lib-Dem parties, both of whom are against the project. You can read more about it in my article ‘Jobs Not Snobs’ in the online edition of the Quarterly Review.
